Irresistible Mardis Gras Hurricane Pops Recipe 

Nothing speaks ‘Mardis Gras’ quite like cake, or at least it’s the first thing I think of! Pancake, King Cake, cupcakes and the list goes on.. 

We’ve got a real treat for Mardis Gras lovers out there, these chocolate ‘hurricane’ cake pops are the dessert treat that’s going to bring your celebrations to the next level. 

These are seriously perfect for entertaining with their yellow, green and purple sprinkles and sweet icing drizzle to add an irresistible texture and coating to the chocolate cake pop that just explodes with each bite. And if that wasn’t enough, they’re served individually on a popsicle stick! 

Mardis Gras on a Stick! 

If melted white chocolate over some cakesicles doesn’t get your mouth water, I honestly don’t know what will. Cakesicle? Those are the molds you’ll be baking these things in, creating the perfect shape for a delicious dessert on a stick coated with chocolate, icing and sprinkles that you won’t be able to put down! 

Customize These Hurricane Pops Yourself 

Food coloring, colored icing and a chocolate swirl can take these pops in a whole different direction if you so desired. 

Add a little more personality by mixing some food coloring into the melted white chocolate, or even by swirling in some dark and/or milk chocolate into the bowl before coating the molds. Not to mention you can bring in some different colored icing or even meringue flowers to make these things seriously pop!

Ingredients 

Chocolate Cupcake

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix
  • 1 ¼ C of whole milk
  • ½ C unsalted sweet cream butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ C chocolate frosting
  • 3 tbsp rum
  • 2 – 14oz bag of Ghirardelli white chocolate melting wafers
  • 1 silicone cake popsicle mat
  • 1 cookie sheet with a wire rack
  • 18 popsicle sticks
  • 1 disposable piping bag
  • Purple, Yellow/Gold and Green Sprinkles

Directions for Making

Cupcake Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a cupcake pan with liners
  2. Using a large bowl, beat together the cake mix, milk, butter and eggs
    until combined and smooth
  3. Fill the cupcake liners ¾ way full
  4. Bake in the oven for 21 minutes
  5. Allow to cool completely
  6. Once the cupcakes have cooled, remove them from their cupcake liners and crumble them into a large mixing bowl
  7. Making the cakesicle cake dough directions :
  8. Once all the cupcakes have been crumbles into moist sand like texture, mix in the rum
  9. Using either your hands or a rubber spatula, mix in the frosting into the crumbs until a dough like mixture forms

Decorating directions

  1. Using the remaining white chocolate in the wafer bags, pour into a large bowl
  2. Using a microwave, melt the white chocolate in 30 second increments, mixing after each time to ensure smooth melted white chocolate
  3. Once the white chocolate is melted, spoon about 1-2 tbsp of the melted white chocolate into the cakesicle molds
  4. Move the cakesicle mold around to ensure that the sides are coated in the white chocolate
  5. Carefully push in the popsicle stick into the bottom of the cakesicle mold
  6. Place the mold into the fridge for about 10 minutes
  7. Once the white chocolate is set, remove from the fridge
  8. Take about 1-2 tbsp of the cake mixture and carefully press into the mold, make sure the side of the chocolate does not break
  9. Re-melt the white chocolate used to coat the cakesicle mold
  10. Once the white chocolate is re-melted, spoon on about 1-2 tbsp of the white chocolate onto the top of the cake mixture into the mold
  11. Place mold back into the fridge for another 30 minutes
  12. Carefully remove the cakesicle from the mold
  13. Place onto the wire rack
  14. Repeat steps with remaining cake dough
  15. Using the remaining melted chocolate, spoon it into a piping bag
  16. Decorating the cakesicle
  17. Cut the tip off the piping bag
  18. Drizzle lines of white chocolate onto the cakesicles
  19. Sprinkle the purple, yellow/gold and green sprinkles onto the cake pops
  20. Allow the chocolate to set before enjoying!
