What is King Cake? 

King Cake is pretty much unanimously one of the most recognizable Mardi Gras icons. It has some religious tradition tied to the holiday celebrations, but ultimately it’s a delicious cake that can serve up some Fat Tuesday deliciousness like none other.

It’s a decadent piece of baking art if you’ve ever seen one! It’s a roll style cake, sometimes filled with cream cheese, but always pictured with the signature heavy coating of icing and Mardi Gras colored sprinkles arranged accordingly.

Pecans in a Cake?

When we’re talking Southern-inspired baking, you’re going to have some pecans here and there. If you’re not totally sold on this delicious baking ingredient, you’ll have to see how it comes to life in these King Cake rolls. 

They’re chopped small for the purpose of these rolls, as they are in the original King Cake recipe itself. In the latter, you’ll find that they make a really savory base for the bottom of the ‘roll’, which combined with cinnamon sugar creates something truly special. You don’t want to sleep on this recipe, trust me on this one!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tube refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 3 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar
  • ½ cup finely chopped pecans

Glaze:

  • 2 cups powder sugar
  • 2 tbsp. Rum

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Unroll crescent rolls and place on the cutting board.
  3. Gather the crescent dough and knead it together into one dough ball.
  4. Place flour on the cutting board and spread it evenly.
  5. Place the dough on the cutting board and begin to roll the dough out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
  6. Slice 4-5 inches in length and 3 inches in width.
  7. In a small bowl add the cinnamon and sugar stir to combine.
  8. Sprinkle each rectangle evenly with about 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon sugar and 1 tablespoon of the pecans.
  9. Starting at long end roll up jelly roll style pinching seam well.
  10. Repeat with each rectangle.
  11. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 – 12 minutes, until golden.
  12. Remove pans to the cooling rack.

To make glaze:

  1. Combine glaze ingredients in a bowl until drizzling consistency.
  2. Pour the glaze on top of the bites.
  3. Then sprinkle those with purple, green and yellow decorator sugars.
