The best part of this adorable craft is everything you need can be picked up from the dollar store! Not only is this craft easy to create but it’s super affordable.

We recommend 2.5’ diameter clay pots for this craft, however you can select a different size if you want it to be larger. Keeping in mind you will need more materials and shamrock trace sheets will need to be increased as well. Don’t worry these are all very easy adjustments.

Clay pot leprechaun hat’s make the perfect centerpieces for hosting a party, kids desks at the classroom, or just for decoration around your home.

Adding a shamrock with your child’s name, your last name, or even a table number if you are hosting a large party!

You can also draw patterns, use stickers, or more glitter to your shamrocks instead of a name. Let your child get super creative. Make sure you have multiple options to add to your hat.

New Tradition Idea

Another great idea for our Clay pot leprechaun hats are asking your child to make a game out of it.

Tell your classroom or children a Leprechaun will be coming overnight and you need to leave them their special clay hat pots. Get them to name the leprechaun and place it on the pot leaving it out for their little friend.

When they wake up the next day, leave a note from the leprechaun thanking them for the wonderful hat and leaving them a few sweet treats – gold coins, rainbow candy, books, whatever you desire. Make it a yearly tradition! Think outside the box and have fun with it!

How to Make a Clay Pot Leprechaun Hat for St. Patrick’s day

Supplies and Materials:

• Dollar Store Clay Pots – 2.5” in diameter
• Dollar Store Craft Paper – Gold Glitter, Lime Green, Olive Green, Kelly Green, and Bright Green
• Acrylic Craft Paint – Bright Green, Dark Green, and Kelly Green
• Ribbon – Rainbow 1/2″ and Black 3/8” 
• Pencil
• Markers
• Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
• Scissors
• Paintbrush
• Ruler
• CLAY POT LEPRECHAUN HAT PATTERN SHEET (PDF)

Instructions:

1. Gather all materials then remove all packaging and labels. 

2. Basecoat three 2.5” clay pots with three different shades of green paint, bright green, dark green, and kelly green.  Let the paint dry and then apply a second coat, if necessary.

 3. Once the clay pots are dry, apply black ribbon around the circumference, just above the rim with a glue gun and glue sticks.

 4. Measure a one-inch by one – inch square of gold glitter cardstock and cut out with scissors.  Apply a gold glitter buckle to the front of the hat with a glue gun and glue sticks.

5. Tie a bow from a rainbow ribbon, cut a triangular notch from the tail ends and attach to the center of the gold glitter buckle with a glue gun and glue sticks.

6. Download and print the Dollar Store Clay Pot Leprechaun Hat Craft Pattern.  Cut out the shamrock shape and then trace onto bright green, olive green, kelly green, and lime green craft paper.  Cut out shamrock shapes with scissors.   

7. Write names on shamrock cutouts and place them on a gold belt buckle.

  Optional: You can also draw patterns instead of names on shamrocks.
