What to buy him this Christmas
Men are notoriously tricky to buy gifts for at Christmas. It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping for a new boyfriend, an old flame, your brother, your ‘bro or your father, there always seem to be the same lacklustre options – socks, hipflasks, handkerchiefs, ludicrous novelty boxers and more socks. Don’t fall into the trap of picking up the first item you find in the gifts for men section of your local department store (probably socks) – there are plenty of unique, beautiful, classic and tasty gift ideas out there, especially online, that won’t be relegated to the sock drawer. You just need to know what to look out for…
For your Boyfriend
If, like the world and his dog, your current squeeze is enjoying the revival of craft beer, consider getting a hand-picked selection of the best global beers. If he’s more of a whisky man pick him up a vintage drinks set that Don Draper would be proud of. For top marks, include a lidded ice container, heavy-based glasses and some mellow single malt he can posture with and dispense to his friends. Wrap up your chosen booze with some accompanying chocolates, spicy nuts and a big fat cigar for an indulgent and masculine hamper.
Let’s face it, your father will probably grin with delight even if you present him with a zealous Christmas jumper covered in sequinned penguins, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get something more considered. Instead of veering towards ‘safe’ territory, consider getting him an experience of a lifetime. From rally car racing with a friend to a hot air balloon ride with mum (aww!), there’s a jaunt out there to take him out of his comfort zone.
For Brothers (and brothers from another mother)
Whether it’s your brother, or just a great male friend, nurture your ‘bro with an exciting new media subscription. If he’s into music, consider a 6 month gift certificate to an online music service. If he’s into film, ditto.
For Uncles, Colleagues, Cousins and Acquaintances
There is a time of year when all good intentions go out the window, and that time is Christmas. Take advantage of this margin of opportunity by buying chocolate. It’s not dietary sabotage, it’s expected. You could even give it the personal touch by baking cookies or making your own truffles.
He will obviously appreciate anything you give to him, so just be sure to give it with lashings of love and best wishes.
